Conclusion and Challenge

How Israeli Messianic Jews read the Scriptures has far-reaching implications for how they live their lives. Given the context of this book, the subject is particularly relevant for how they relate to Palestinian Christians living together with them in the land. The issues chosen for this chapter reflect some of the unique factors that are primary concerns for Israeli Messianic Jews as they read Scripture. This is not to say that other issues such as Christology and eschatology are inconsequential. However, due to space considerations, the most broadly characteristic issues were the focus of the chapter.

The Israeli Messianic Jewish community needs to explore new avenues of communication with their Palestinian brothers and sisters who are also committed to Jesus and hold the Scriptures as their rule for life and faith. All faith communities elicit different understandings from the same biblical texts and they apply those texts differently according to their particular hermeneutic, their individual and collective history, and their social context. It is therefore important to be aware of our own presuppositions, our historical and social location, and the various lenses through which we view Scripture. Our view is never the ‘only right view’. Any approach to Scripture must be with an attitude of humility and openness to hear how others read the same texts. Our different backgrounds and social locations can be enriching rather than oppositional. Approaching the Scriptures, and one another, with a spirit of love and respect can protect us from the theological arrogance that assumes our view to be the ‘right’ one. One of our aims in this book is to hear the Lord together through his living word, spoken into our different contexts.
